OpenAI is testing a new feature called Sponsored Agents inside ChatGPT, letting users chat directly with business-sponsored bots and click through to advertiser websites via ads embedded in the interface itself. Some US advertisers are already live. This is a genuinely new advertising channel opening up inside one of the most-used consumer software products in the world, and founders should understand what it actually is before either dismissing it or rushing to buy in.

What Sponsored Agents Actually Are

This is not a banner ad bolted onto a chat window. A Sponsored Agent is a business-run conversational bot that a ChatGPT user can be routed to or choose to interact with, presumably when a query touches on something relevant to that advertiser’s business, then click through to the advertiser’s own site to complete an action. It is closer to a search ad evolving into a conversation than a traditional display ad. Instead of a headline and a link competing for attention in a results page, a business gets an actual interactive presence inside the moment a user is already asking a question related to what that business offers.

This matters because it changes the nature of the ad unit itself. A search ad interrupts intent with a static message. A Sponsored Agent participates in the conversation the user is already having, at least in theory, which is a meaningfully different kind of attention to compete for.

Why This Is Worth Watching Rather Than Jumping Into Immediately

Early advertising placements inside a new AI surface carry real uncertainty that is worth naming honestly. Pricing models are unproven, this is a test, not a mature auction system with predictable costs. User trust and behavior around sponsored content inside a chat interface is completely unknown, people may engage with a sponsored agent very differently than they engage with a search ad or a social post, and nobody yet has real data on what that difference looks like. Attribution and measurement, always the hardest part of any new ad channel, are likely to be rough in this earliest phase, since ChatGPT is not built the way ad platforms are typically built with mature reporting infrastructure from day one.

None of that means ignore it. It means understand what you would actually be testing if you got in early, a new channel with real potential and real unknowns, not a proven acquisition channel with predictable returns.

The Bigger Shift This Represents

Step back from the specific feature and look at what it signals. ChatGPT crossed roughly 1 billion weekly active users a few weeks ago, a scale we covered directly. A consumer product at that scale monetizing through advertising, rather than purely through subscriptions, is a meaningful shift in how the biggest AI company in the world plans to make money from its free and lower-tier users. That has implications beyond just a new ad unit to consider. It suggests AI chat interfaces are moving toward the same advertising-supported model that shaped search and social media, which means the marketing playbook that worked in those channels, understanding intent, bidding on attention, optimizing for conversion inside the platform’s own rules, will likely need a new version built specifically for how people interact with conversational AI.

What to Actually Do Right Now

For most founders, the right move today is watching, not spending. This is a test with limited advertiser access, unproven mechanics, and no meaningful case studies yet. The founders who benefit most from a new channel like this are rarely the ones who pile in during the earliest, roughest phase, they are the ones who understood the mechanics early enough to move decisively once the platform matures and the actual cost and performance data becomes available.

What is worth doing now is simply staying aware that this exists and tracking how it develops. If Sponsored Agents expand beyond the current test group, or if early advertiser results start circulating, that is the signal to evaluate seriously whether your business has a natural fit for a conversational ad placement, the kind of business where a user asking ChatGPT a relevant question would genuinely benefit from being connected to what you offer.
